On October 14th, a group of nine students and staff embarked on an exciting journey to the Welney Wetland Centre, an important conservation nature reserve located in the Fens. This unique wetland habitat of the Ouse washes is home to a diverse range of birds, mammals, insects, and other wetland creatures.
Journey to the Wetland
Our day began with a train ride from Cambridge to Ely, followed by a complimentary minibus ride from Ely station to Welney. This free service is part of a three-month initiative funded by Greater Anglia’s community project. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and volunteers at the visitor centre, who provided us with binoculars for our exploration. After enjoying a quick cup of tea in the cafe, we set off to explore the reserve.
Discovering the Reserve
The main observatory offered spectacular views across the ponds and reedbeds, complete with plenty of comfortable seating. As artists, we brought sketching materials and a camera to capture the beauty of the wildlife and landscape.
During our visit, we spotted a variety of birds, including:
-
Pink-footed geese
-
Greylag geese
-
Swans
-
Egrets
-
Moorhens
-
Many ducks, including Mallards and Pochards
-
Sparrows
-
A Marsh Harrier
We also had the opportunity to see some beautiful moths collected by the staff from their traps before they were released back into the wild.
A Day of Inspiration
With over three hours to immerse ourselves in this extraordinary place, the students were excited, engaged, and happy to have had this opportunity, with many commenting how they would like to go again. We look forward to exploring with more students in the months ahead, as the sketches and experiences will undoubtedly inspire artwork in the studios at Rowan.
Usman shared, “I really enjoyed it, seeing all the birds. I’d never been there before, and I would love to go again.” Usman was completely captivated by the view from the main observatory, creating a delicate and beautiful drawing.
