In this short introduction to Chinese Sumi painting and calligraphy, you’ll learn to work with ink and brush, following a longstanding tradition that values flow, presence and the beauty of a single expressive mark. It’s a drawing technique that’s endlessly rewarding to explore.
You’ll be guided through the fundamental brushwork techniques that underpin both Sumi painting and Chinese calligraphy, learning to control line, tone and rhythm as you build confidence. Expect to slow down, tune in, and find yourself absorbed in a practice that’s as calming as it is creatively rich.
No experience is needed — just an open mind and a willingness to let go of perfection.
