In this 8 week woodwork course, you’ll design and create your own functional or artistic piece in wood, using traditional hand-tool carving and construction techniques. From initial sketches and maquettes through to carving, shaping and polychromy (the art of applying colour to wood), you’ll be supported to make something that’s genuinely and distinctly yours.
This is a course built around your project. Whether you have a clear idea in mind or want help finding one, you’ll receive personalised guidance throughout — with two experienced tutors on hand to help you develop your design and realise it in wood.
This course uses hand tools only — no power tools or machinery.
Sarah Healey-Dilkes brings a background in restoration, working freelance with a number of national institutions — so she knows how to handle wood with real care and precision. Alistair Burgass combines a background in boatbuilding and fine art, and creates pieces for the Kettle’s Yard shop. Between them, they cover a remarkable range of expertise, and you’ll have access to both throughout the course.
All materials are included. You’re welcome to bring your own tools, images for inspiration, or even a piece of wood you already have in mind — the tutors are happy to work with what you bring.
£230 for 8 week course
Please note there are no sessions on Mondays 4th and 25th May, and on Thursday 28th May.
