Hello to Emily

Emily has been attending Rowan for around two years, joining us three times each week. She enjoys painting and immersing herself in clay projects every Friday. Recently, Emily has been focusing on a heartfelt project for her brother. I had the wonderful opportunity to enter the ceramics room and chat with Emily about her latest creation – Duncan!

Hello Emily – please tell us about Duncan. Who is Duncan?
‘A horse’
How did you make Duncan?
‘I made him in clay. I made pinch pots, when I stick them together with a special slip, which you stick. I smoothed out his legs with a kidney. I glazed (for) the kiln. I baked him (laughs at this). Then it was Duncan!’
Did you learn any new skills making Duncan?
‘The mane looks pink to start with and then changes to blue with the glazing.’
How did you make the mane?
‘Made little patches to start with, rolled it in my hands, measured it then turned it through the extruder. Roll it, put it in, push it through, then it came out like spaghetti!’
Who is Duncan for?
‘I make the horse for my brother, for my brothers’ birthday. (Another) year has flown by. My brother, his favourite animal is a horse. His favourite colour is blue.’
Why is he called Duncan?
‘Band called blue and because he is blue’
Did you enjoy making Duncan?
‘Yes – because I like how he looks for the horse is very beautiful’
What is the next project?
‘Drawing jugs’ (For the Painted Church Project). ‘Making the patterns. Making a collage of pictures.’

A fantastic project Emily well done. We look forward to seeing what you do next!
